| As President Lincoln once said, "the world will never forget what they did here." Iraq is not Gettysburg, but those who fell there could not have done more for our country. The Engel family has my profound respect in their moments of lasting grief. |

| Cpl Todd Herman of 'Delta' Co 2nd Light Armored Recon is a good friend of Mark's as is Cpl Jeffrey D. Lawrence, PFC Rodricka A. Youmans, LCPL Scott E. Dougherty, LCPL Justin T. Hunt four 'Delta' Co Marines who gave the ultimate sacrifice on July 6th, 2004 and were with Mark on that grievous day.
Todd received an IED on Sept 12th 2004 and will be electing to finish his surgeries in the near future, as this is Dec 30,2005. He will carry with him a level of Honor unknown to anyone outside of 'Delta' Co for having served with such Men, such as Mark. As I have seen this Pride before being the nephew of Vern Stewart (past)101St Airborn Div, 506th PIR, Easy Co.......

| Your son had the most uplifting spirit. I met him while he was stationed in North Carolina. He became a great friend of mine. He knew how to make me laugh. I'll never forget the time we spent decorating a christmas tree around Thanksgiving of 2003. I also remember watching him surf many times at Wrightsville Beach. That was always the best, since we shared the passion for the beach. I will never forget him and his smile! God bless. |

| Mr. and Mrs. Engel,
I cannot know where to begin to even talk to you about the man I knew. I mourn everyday for the son you lost. I have not been to this site for quite some time, I'm sorry. I couldn't do it. I thought that by trying to forget about it might make it easier; it's not. I miss my fellow Marine and my brother Mark. He is in my thoughts constantly... |

| I know this comes very late but i recently stumbled across this site. First and foremost I must say that i'm very sorry on the loss of your son. I served with him after his first deployment and we were together on the uss iwo jima. All that i can remember about him was that he was very outgoing, and funny. In particular i remember him helping my vehicle get back in order, and he was one of the hardest workers i'd ever seen. I hope that since his passing, the family has had some closure.
God bless you all
An old freind |

| I spoke with Dana on the phone today (5/4/05) and, as we spoke, I mentioned that I had served in the Marine Corps. She spoke so affectionately of Mark and told me about the website his family has dedicated to him. It was an honor to read your feelings, fond memories and the love that you have for Mark.

| 3/3/05-What an incredible tribute to Mark, a remarkable young man. My husband and I just heard about this tragedy and after reading this tribute album that was put together in your son/brother's-honor, I was compelled to say how touched I was and wanted to express my condolences to the family. No parent has to face anything any sadder than the loss of their child. It is as unnatural and as painful as anything one could ever imagine. My heart goes out to your family. |

| I saw the web page for the first time today and was very impressed. I was curious if any of the family would be coming out for the Division Memorial Service here at Camp Lejeune on the 19th of January. If so some of the Marines from Mark's old platoon and I would like to meet and talk with you. I may be reached on my email at NunnallyKK@2mardiv.usmc.mil or on my phone at 910-451-6338. I also have a large number of pictures and some video clips of Mark I would like to pass on to you if you would send me your current address. |

| Dear Sharon, Bill, Rachel, Dana, Eric and Bradley,
We were so saddened to hear the news about Mark. There are no words that can express our sorrow.
As Brooke and I looked at the website honoring Mark, we looked at the photographs, we could not help but remember all the wonderful times we spent together in Los Angeles. We were only sorry to not be able to watch the boy's grow into men when you moved away.
If mark were hear today, we would tell him how proud we were to know him and what a great job his parents did.
We will miss you. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

| Mark was a very awsome marine to work with. He was a happy go lucky guy. He knew his job both as a scout and as a mech very well. The best part of mark was that he was the platoon's class clown. He would say the most off the wall things and it would make us laugh so hard. There was never a dull moment with him. He is a awsome Marine. He is well missed and loved.... |

| Mark was one of the best Marines I ever had work for me. I say this after seeing him in action. Mark and I were part of what was called, "The Four Horsemen." Needless to say, I was ecstatic when I knew that he was coming to Iraq with us. He was and still is to me, a Marine I can count on to get the job done. Never have I seen a more honorable man. |

| Please accept our deepest sympathy upon the loss of your dear Mark. Pete and I were so saddened when we heard the tragic news of your brave marine son who gave his life in the service of our country. We were out of town and unable to attend the service to honor Mark's life and to offer our personal consolences to you. We want you to know that we were devastated when we heard the news. With your permission, I'd like to propose a special legislative tribute to Mark when the 2005 legislative session takes up in January. Meanwhile, we'll be contributing to the Cherry Creek School's Foundation Fund in Mark's name to support the district efforts to honor his memory and his dedication to our country. |

| Mark was one of my best friends. We went out together all the time. He was definetly the life of every party. We called our selves the last two of the "Four Horsemen". He ment a lot to me as a friend. You couldnt ask for a better friend. It really hurt when I had to see his vehicle destroyed. We were the first ones on the scene and it was a sight that I cant get out of my head. When I heard Mark was one of the injured ones, everything in me felt like it had come to a quick stop. He was always a strong person but the Lord had bigger and better plans for hime that night. I think of him and all the fun we had together and it actually brings tears to my eyes knowing that we can never have that again. My family , as well as my self, have yall in my prayers everynight. I really think this sight is the best sight there is cause it Honors one of the GREATEST friend a man could ever have!!!
God Bless ...and like Mark would always say

We were in some pretty bad situations together and you would have been so proud of your sons bravery under fire. He truly was a marine's marine!

| Today I received a email from Collen Wilks (Quin's mom, my sister-in-law). After reading her email, I was in tears. I saw Quin in August and noticed his tatoo of Mark's name but never really pressed for answers. My husband Quinn met with Quin later and they talked alot about Mark. After seeing his picture and knowing how strongly Quin felt for him. I wanted to let you know our thoughts and prayers are with you. My Son Kegan(age 5)was on Quin's lap in the second photo. After seeing me crying, he inquired, I explained. He said he needed to say a prayer. He dropped to his knees and asked Mark to watch over Quin and all of us and keep us safe amen. More tears, Thank you for sharing Mark with us, he will help me stop and enjoy the little things alot more. Shirley Wilks. |

| I am truely sorry for your loss. All of the countless hours I've spent at your house is something I will always cherish. I always looked up to Mark; whether it was when he would talk to me about cars or even when he wasn't talking to me, he was the kind of guy I wanted to grow up to be. After hearing the news while in Minnesota, I wanted to come back to Colorado just so I could give you my condolences in person and let you know how sorry I am. You all should be happy for the son, brother, and friend you have raised. I love you all and hope to see you soon.

Mark was unique in every aspect of his life. I have so many great memories of him...and us. Knowing him for the past seven years, I have gathered many memories. He will always hold a special place with me. Mark was loved by so many, but I will always cherish everything I had with him. He will always be with all of us as we travel along our individual paths. He loved and was loved. My heart, my prayers, and my thoughts go out to you all: Mr. and Mrs. Engel, Eric, Brad, Dana, Rachael, and Dean. People can call me a hero all they want, but Mark is truly a great definition of a Hero. I sure hope that his sacrifice doesn't go unrecognized, I know that seeing the pictures of Mark I can say that he was very happy with his family. I know that my words won't heel the pain, but I hope my prayers will help the family go through this rough time that they have been faced with. God bless the Engel family, God bless America, more importantly God bless Mark. He paid the ultimate price for me and my family's freedom. GOD BLESS!!! |

| Dear Engel Family,
I am Quinton DeWall's oldest sister. I just wanted to let you know how much your family and Mark meant to Quin. He really felt a connection with your family in the time he spent with you. The funny thing about Quin is that once you get through that tough guy exterior he is a real softie. Quin has great dedication to his family and friends and I can see that he and Mark had that in common. I am so very sorry that you got the phone call that we all dread and that you lost a wonderful member of your family. My heart goes out to you and you will all be in our prayers.
Sincerly,

| Engel Family -
We are so sorry for the loss of your son. Our thought and prays are with you during this difficult time. We are so grateful for the dedicated service that Mark did for our country. We are so lucky to have such brave and honorable soldiers serving our country. Please find peace in knowing that Mark died doing what so many of us can't do - serving others. |

| 8/17/2004 Scott and Barbara DeWall - Avondale, AZ |
| I am the father of Quinton (Quin) DeWall, faithful friend and Marine Corps comrade to Mark Engel. While I personally never met Mark, I know from my son that he was a wonderful young man, worthy of all the love and honors bestowed upon him in his short life.
As I ponder the fact that my son will return to Iraq this coming September I can do so with the knowledge and comfort that Mark will be watching over him.
Mark was certainly a wonderful young man, but most importantly he was a member of a wonderful group of family and friends that loved and cared for him, as is obvious by the poems and letters on this web site.
Please accept my families condolences in Mark's passing and know that while we have not personally crossed paths, we will always share a common bond in our memories of Mark and our prayers for young soldiers like Quin who wake every morning with a true sense of what it means to serve mankind and their country.

| Mark was a good freind and a great marine. When a marine passes on they say that he had died for his country. Mark didn't die for his country he died for the people he loved. Me and Mark were in same company the first the first part of the war. Mark wasn't just a good marine he was a great worrier. He fought all the way to the end. He never gave up, his body did. knowing that he's in heaven watching over his family right now make saying goodbye that much easier. Mark will be missed by us all and he will not be forgotten. |

| I am so very sorry for your loss. While I didn't know Mark personally, I do know Dana and am sure while sibs are each unique in their own way, they are also very similar so I know Mark was a great man, son and brother who's spirit will live on in your heart and soul! Coming from a large family myself with brothers of my own, I can only imagine such a loss and I hope (selfishly) that I dont have to experience it. I do apprecaite the sacrafise that Mark made for me and my family as he protected us and our world as we know it! My heart and prayers go out to all of you. |

| Mark, we didn't know you well, but from what we have heard and read, you were a man that fully embraced life to the fullest. From soccer to hockey, football, rugby, and skiing to your service in the marines-- you were a doer and a leader. You touched and protected so many in your short life. You will be missed. |

| I want to wish my sincere condolences to your entire family. Every one of us is indebted to your son and brother. Without his strength and courage, we could never enjoy the many freedoms that we often take for granted. Reading through so many of these articles, it’s clear that Mark has touched many lives in many different ways. He was the loyal friend that everyone could count on through good and bad. He was the brother that messed with his siblings as only a good brother can. He was the wild son that tested his parents, but made them proud through the lively spirit he was and always will be. So, humbly, I say – Thank you, Mark. You’re my hero. |
